Keeping the Focus on the "Student" in the Student Discipline Process

9:30 AM–10:25 AM Oct 17, 2022 (US - Central)

Room B3, BoS Center

Description

In this session, we will discuss the importance of focusing on the individual student, the root causes of the issue, and examining the "whole" story. We will examine the opportunity to bring equity, diversity, inclusion, and restorative justice opportunities into the student discipline process. The current approach and administration of discipline in the school setting requires the acknowledgement of the objective and subjective factors that influences the decision making process for all involved. It is imperative that the school setting be one that honors all voices from all internal and external stakeholders beginning with and ending in favor of the well-being of each student. The idea that students have a voice and that students are stakeholders may bring pause, however, their individual circumstances such as their home situation, neighborhood environment, grades, social and emotional well-being, trauma, attendance, test scores, prior discipline history, and the details that brought them to the attention of school administrators need to be thoroughly examined. We will provide alternatives to the school suspension process such as, peer groups, social and emotional interventions, positive behavior supports, peace circles, internal and external counseling, community supports, etc, that ultimately address the root-cause of the behavior.
